Millie

We are appealing for donations to send this kitten to our UK colleagues for re homing or if anyone can take her into their hearth & home here on Crete.

This little one was seen to be thrown from a second floor window but she miraculously survived and was rescued by a caring group of cat lovers, she was then brought up to us for assessment. We cannot take her in we have too many sick/injured & kittens waiting to go to the UK.

She is a delightful little madam! About 14 weeks old small & dainty for age she is funny, vocal, full of life & very opinionated but quite happy to be cuddled & not feral at all.

She has a stunning grey & white coat and green/golden eyes and she appears completely unharmed with no injury whatsoever and unusually for most coming to us no signs of cat flu or any illness!

If between us all we find nowhere for her to go she will have to be put back to her local colony which is however supported & supervised by these kind local people.

We can assist with neutering/vaccination if re homed locally.

We have so many needing homes but after being so lucky to survive the fall it would be wonderful if she could have some luck by decent human beings giving her a safe & secure life.

Bulletin from the Animal Welfare Department (Apokoronas Council)

The Municipality of Apokoronas is trying to find a solution to the issue of stray animals with a specific management plan drawn up and unanimously approved by the City Council at the last meeting. Meanwhile, the Mayor Charalambos Koukianakis, has called to implement legislation and to permanently shut down the illegal animal center in Kaina Apokoronas.

Robin, Reggie & Ronnie

We have 3 kittens desperate for homes a very sad start to their lives lucky to be rescued by one of our volunteers.

Found by tourists thrown under their car parked at Kalyves beach they nearly drove over them. Still feeding from mother they were traumatized, blind due to eye infections with pus & heaving with parasites.

Now 10 weeks of age they are adorable boys playing, mischievous full of life unrecognisable from when they came into us.

Robin: Black/grey/white tabby his eyes are perfect, he has no health issues, he is the cutest & friendliest of the three boys. Purring all the time he loves to play is confident full of life & vitality.

Reginald (Reggie): Beautiful beige & black tabby, twin to Ronnie he suffered scarring to the iris/cornea & cannot focus. He definitely sees us but how much we cannot tell. Reggie plays, runs does all the usual kitten things but is quieter & much more reserved than his brothers.

Sadly he has entropion both eyes (eyelashes turn inwards) he has twice daily eye drops which are working well no signs of infection. We are waiting, sometimes they grow out of it but if surgery is required it is a simple procedure if re homed here we are happy to do this. He needs lots of love & affection someone to give him time to gain confidence.

Ronald (Ronnie): Twin to Reggie another stunning tabby he is much more confident & playful, he too had eye issues he has been left with a cataract in his left eye, very mild entropion to the right eye. He sees fine no obvious issues at all he can focus, plays normally & is just delightful. We are hoping he might grow out of his entropion.

Tilly

Tilly’s rescue has been traumatic for all involved you may find some of the photos distressing.

Her blind mother had been having a succession of kittens catching chlamydia off her only to either die or survive blind themselves. The mother cat lived in Chania out of a litter of 5 only two kittens remained one of which was taken into our vet Eleni

A male tabby (@11 weeks of age) already blind he died fitting the afternoon we brought him home probably meningitis from the eye infections. At this point we persuaded the gentleman feeding the mother that this cycle had to end she needed urgent neutering. The mother has now been neutered cared for afterwards by the person feeding her & returned to her street, our vet kindly sharing the cost of neutering.

Following week the remaining sibling was caught, already lost one eye to infection the other remained just beginning to succumb to infection. We took her for nursing we did not expect her to live but she was stronger than her brother, fluids, antibiotics treating all the infections & then parasite treatments she is now thriving!

Tilly requires an operation to remove the left eye when she has grown in about another month, all her infections have gone we have started her vaccinations she will also be neutered. Such a special little one she is courageous, clever running all over the place playing trying to catch flies her right eye seems to have normal vision.

Tilly adores human cuddles an adorable kitten she can go to a new home now under supervision here or after her operation.

Penelope

Penelope (@1½ years old) was very lucky to be found by the roadside after having been hit by a car, she suffered serious fractures to her pelvis & fractured her left hind leg.

Brought into the last neuter session she has been with us on cage rest for 5 weeks, now standing/sitting her coat is a gorgeous colour she has the most amazing eye make up! Looking really well obviously feeling better as she tries to get out!

Penny needs another month of cage rest no jumping to allow the fractures to heal then we shall do another X-Ray to check all is well. When her pelvis is healed we can neuter her & begin vaccinations.

Timid, shy and demure she is a little lady who enjoys cuddles now talking to us she is tame needing a quiet loving home.

We need a caring gentle adopter any donations towards her care & travel would be welcome.

Raggy enjoys the sessions particularly the Royal Canin Mobility biccies! He has shown a good response, his remaining hind leg being increasingly sensitive and he is using it more.

His wonderful adopters have a ready made harem two girls both of which suffered abuse and lost a leg. The adopters are comfortable with disabled cats and have an enclosed garden where he will be safe.
He can stand, the wound has healed he uses his litter trays but it will be sometime before he regains full use of his remaining back leg. The lazy boy has worked out he can run faster by using his powerful front legs on the tiles to get along!

5th April 2015
Ragnar was found by colleagues in the streets of Chania dragging his back legs along the road. Partially paralysed on the right side worse on the left X-Rays showed the lower lumbar spine had been slightly compressed from a blow to the spine. Everyone agreed we had to give this handsome boy a chance we were asked to nurse him, 6 weeks of cage rest no jumping, anti inflammatory medication, physio and heat.

Gradually his tail moved, he regained control of his bladder/bowel using his litter trays. The right leg improved he was standing & walking but the left leg remained paralysed with muscle wasting, stiffness his paw bent backwards hindering movement tripping him up.

Another 2 weeks later we had to make the difficult decision do we euthanize him as clearly he would never walk normally. Ragnar obviously longed to be back outside which would not be safe for him now he would not be able to run free as he did before.
The alternative was to amputate the useless limb hoping his left back leg would continue to improve taking his full weight allowing him to have a good quality of life all be it restricted to indoors or outside pens.The risk would be putting him through such traumatic surgery only to have to euthanize him if his remaining leg did not take his weight.
This week we went ahead amputated his left leg, neutered & micro chipped him ready for his passport. To our delight & relief he is coping much better his walking & standing is stable the wound is healing well.
It will take many months for him to recover fully but we are now confident enough he will do well to ask for an adopter who can give him a safe secure home.

Ragnar needs to be an indoor cat with access to watching the outside world a pen outside would be kinder for him. He is a typical Greek boy with the most gorgeous green eyes, wants his own way, talks all the time, likes head rubs but not really a lap cat, he eats everything he owns you!
He does seem to be very sociable interested in other cats he likes his girls but he would need to be the dominant male.
